The Department for Communities commissioned Marie Cavanagh to undertake the Second Independent Review of how the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment is working in Northern Ireland.

The Call for Evidence was aimed at organisations and individuals who have information relevant to how the PIP assessment is operating for new claims, award reviews and change of circumstances. The Review made a total of 12 Recommendations which focussed on the various stages of the PIP process.

Recommendation 1 is Communication and accessibility as it is 'vitally important that disabled people are not excluded from accessing products and services due to having different communication requirements.'

Recommendation 1 "To improve accessibility for those claiming PIP, the Department, in consultation with stakeholders should explore and develop alternative methods of communication and improve existing communication products and information' - has been accepted by the Department.
