‘Light Up Purple’ initiative to celebrate International Day of Disabled People 2020 Posted 03.12.2020 December 3rd 2020 is International Day of Disabled People, this is an annual global celebration and a chance for the disability community to come together as one voice both to celebrate achievement but also to focus on the challenges that disabled people continue to face. Disability Action began this initiative last year and has again asked iconic buildings and landmarks across Northern Ireland to ‘Light Up Purple’. Purple is the recognised colour associated with disability in the UK and in participating in this event local Councils and others are again showing their support to the Day’s celebrations. Andrea Brown Interim Chief Executive said: Disability Action is delighted at the level of participation we have received this year. 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, when many have felt disconnected and isolated – it is great to witness so many iconic landmarks across all Council areas in Northern Ireland ‘light up purple’ as a demonstration of their encouragement to the disability community. Disability Action is again partnering with The Department for Communities and participating in an online event this afternoon. This year's theme is "Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 world". #idpwd2020 #socialinclusion #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs Buildings and landmarks that will be lit up in support of IDPWD include: Disability Action HQ Office Belfast Sam Thompson Bridge Belfast Derry Council Offices Titanic Building Belfast Magee Clock Bangor Ards Town Hall Enniskillen Castle Strule Arts Centre Omagh Lagan Valley Island Craigavon Civic Centre Armagh Gaol The Palace Demense Banbridge Clock Tower at Town Hall Banbridge Ranfurly Arts Centre Dungannon Burnavon Arts Centre Cookstown Bridewell Magherafelt Cloonavin Coleraine Magee Campus Ulster University Antrim Civic Centre Ballyclare Town Hall Mossley Mill Newry Town Hall Downpatrick Leisure Centre Crescent Arts Centre Belfast Stormont Buildings
