Disability Action and disabled people are devastated by the loss of Monica Wilson.  We lost our friend and former CEO Monica Wilson who was a leader like no other. Monica was a strong and independent woman, unafraid to challenge anyone, regardless of their status or position.  Monica brought princes and world leaders to Disability Action and disabled people.

She had a straightforward and direct manner, never hesitating to express her opinions. She would correct anyone using incorrect language or obstructing access. She once scolded Stephen Nolan for interrupting her and not allowing her to finish her point during a conversation.

In a defiant move, she deliberately chose an office on the first floor of the building. She was independent and refused assistance. In most cases she did not want people touching her wheelchair, but at a staff Christmas party, she allowed our children to have fun by pushing her up and down the corridor. Her love for her family was evident in everything she did.

She held a position on the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland and contributed to the UK Disability Rights Taskforce.  She was an active participant in the Economic Rights Working Party concerning the Northern Ireland Bill of Rights and served on the Learning and Skills Advisory Board within the Department for Employment and Learning.  Monica was President of the European Union of Supported Employment and a member Board of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Her remarkable contributions earned her recognition, including an OBE in 1997 for her dedicated service to disabled people. In 2001, she was honored with an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Ulster, and in 2002, she received the 'RADAR's Harding Award,' a prestigious distinction presented to Monica distinguished advocate for disability rights.
