Disability Action Northern Ireland welcomes the launch of Northern Ireland's Consumer Energy Charters for Winter 2026/27, recognising the important protections these charters provide for households and small businesses across the region.

As an organisation, we know that many disabled people face additional everyday costs that others do not, and with projected Personal Independence Payment (PIP) shortfalls averaging £873 per month between 2026 and 2029, fuel costs continue to place serious pressure on household budgets, leaving too many disabled people at risk of being pushed further into fuel poverty. Being able to adequately heat a home is not a luxury — for many disabled people, it is essential to maintaining health, wellbeing, independence and full participation in community life, and we must ensure that no disabled person is forced to choose between heating their home and meeting other basic needs. We would encourage anyone concerned about their energy or utility bills this winter to contact their supplier as early as possible to discuss the support, payment options and assistance that may be available. Disabled people can also contact Disability Action's Information and Advice Service, where our team can provide tailored guidance on available support, benefits, grants and other sources of assistance to help navigate the real challenges of rising household costs.

Andrea Brown,

CEO, Disability Action says,

"No one should have to choose between staying warm and meeting their essential living costs. As energy prices continue to place pressure on household budgets, it is vital that disabled people can access the support they need to heat their homes, protect their health and remain active in their communities. We encourage anyone who is struggling to seek advice early and find out what help is available."
