Disability Action works in partnership with colleges, training organisations, young disabled people and their families - helping to make a difference and create lifelong opportunities for trainees.

Meet Shane who kick-started his training with NWRC, Greystone Campus, Limavady to undertake an NVQ Level II Motor Vehicle which he successfully completed and is now in his final year of his Level III Apprenticeship with Bob Mullan Motors, Campsie, Derry.  From the outset Shane applied himself, had an eagerness to learn and to develop his skills, loved a challenge, displayed personal determination and got job satisfaction.

Throughout his training Shane accepted support from Disability Action’s Training Support Service, and provision was also made by NWRC to meet his individual needs.

Shane’s parents are very proud of what he has achieved in his training and in life. He has fulfilled his aspirations of becoming a mechanic.

Shane’s father said:

Shane was the youngest child diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 3 in the UK when they reluctantly put him on medication.  As a result of many obstacles and barriers Shane has faced, he has overcome his disability and proved his disability has not held him back due to the support from his family, Doctors, Child & Family Team, NWRC Limavady and Disability Action whose support has been invaluable.

Shane said:

Mary Beth, my Employment & Training Officer at Disability Action, visited me in the college and the workplace, talked to my tutors, employer and my parents - always asking the right questions and sorting out any queries for me which gave me encouragement, reassurance and kept me focused.

Bob Mullan, Shane’s employer would encourage all employers to have a diverse and inclusive workforce and develop opportunities for young people in training with disabilities to reach their potential.  Bob said:

Throughout Shane’s time in training he always shows a willingness to learn, works as part of a team, uses his initiative and is reliable. Nothing is a bother, he’s always happy to please. Shane is a young man with a bright future ahead.
