Support In Work FAQs

How do I become involved?
You should contact any of our Placement Officers at Disability Action who will give you advice and guidance on the programme. You can also get in touch with the Disablement Employment Advisor (DEA) in your local Jobs and Benefits Office.

How many hours will I be expected to work?
A workable job must be at least 16 hours per week and earning at least the National Minimum Wage.

What if I am already in a job?

Under the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) employers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate disabled employees. In these circumstances workable may not always be the most appropriate option.

If after adjustments have been made and the individual is still at risk of losing their job, support under Workable (NI) may be appropriate. For further information and advice contact a Placement Officer at Disability Action.

What if my condition deteriorates?
Once an individual is on the programme the Placement Officer will draw up a development plan for the employee. This is used as a basis for the individual, employer and Placement Officer to assess the pattern of the employee’s disability over time and work towards the best option for that person. This plan will be reviewed regularly with the option of long-term support.

Who is eligible for the programme?
To be eligible a person must be:

  • Either in employment or seeking a job
  • 16 years or over
  • A person with a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) which has a substantial impact on their ability to carry out a particular job.

Will my benefits be affected?
Placement Officers can provide advice and guidance based on individual’s circumstances.
