Total newbies and experienced theatre people sought to tell their stories on stage for disability led project

24 January 2012

Do you feel strongly about the issues relating to disability in Ireland?  Fancy bringing your views to the stage? Making changes in how young people see disability?

If you are an adult with physical and/or sensory disabilities then this Forum Theatre Project may be for you.

An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny and The Alley Theatre, Strabane are looking for ten people to form a forum theatre group as part of a cross border awareness project.

The group will create a new play inspired by the personal stories of its members. The play will be toured in Strabane and across county Donegal, reaching out through theatres, schools, community centres and festivals to raise awareness of disability among young people aged 14-25.

There are no auditions, instead you go along to a taster workshop to find if you like the idea.  Workshops can be arranged for groups too. Deadline is Fri 27 January.

Before contacting Kate Brown, to find out more, check you are eligible.

You need to be
1.     over 18
2.     living in Donegal County or Stranbane District Council areas,
3.     a disabled person (physical or sensory impairment),  and
4.     have the time to commit to the programme.

This involves meeting two to three times a week, for  12 weeks from February to March to devise and rehearse the piece, then occasional days to tour from May to September and two festivals in October and November 2012.

Forum Theatre was created by the late Brazilian Director Augusto Boal and is a technique for actors and non-actors. Therefore no previous experience of theatre or performance is required.

The Forum Theatre Project is part of a larger Community Awareness Programme run by CAWT. Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) is the cross border health and social care partnership. CAWT’s Community Awareness Programme delivers initiatives which challenge attitudes towards people with disabilities in an attempt to create an awareness of disability in the community and ensure accessibility for all.

Make contact by the end of February to arrange a taster workshop for you/your group.
