New duties on transport providers

31 May 2009

Consultation on draft Statutory Code of Practice The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland is consulting on its draft Statutory Code of Practice on the forthcoming Disability Discrimination (Transport Vehicles) Regulations (NI) 2009 from 8 June until 25 September 2009.

The draft Code sets out the scope and application of the Regulations upon transport providers, and explains the extent of the new rights for disabled people.  Transport providers will be under a legal duty not to treat disabled people less favourably than other service users, and to make reasonable adjustments to make their services accessible.  Transport services affected include: buses and coaches, taxis, trains, rental vehicles and breakdown / recovery services.
