Investigation into Nursing Care - Call for Evidence

04 February 2010

The Human Rights Commission is investigating how older people living in nursing homes in Northern Ireland are treated. We are especially interested to learn about the day to day lives of nursing home residents and the care they receive.

Investigators have been carrying out fieldwork since November 2009 in a number of nursing homes across Northern Ireland where they have been speaking to residents, relatives, staff and home owners.

To help gather as much information as possible, the Human Rights Commission ran a call for evidence through a free and confidential telephone line over a two week period. The phone lines are now closed and a high volume of calls were received. The Commission would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the nursing homes in Northern Ireland who displayed our posters and all of the people who took the time to call us. The lines were extremely busy throughout the two week period and a number of people used the voicemail service to arrange for call backs. All voicemails received during the two week period are currently being returned.

If you did not get a chance to call and would like to tell the Human Rights Commission about your experience, there is a short confidential questionnaire which you can complete and send back by email.

You can find out more about the investigation including the terms of reference on our website: http://www.nihrc.org/investigations
