Sixty People Get Out, Get Active for Inclusive Boccia Play Offs at Foyle Arena

04 July 2017

Live Active NI’s, Get Out Get Active (GOGA) Programme, funded by Spirit of 2012 drew sixty participants to the Foyle Arena last week to take part in a fully inclusive Boccia competition.

Live Active NI, Active Recreation Officer, Kieran Coyle launched the programme in Derry City & Strabane in January and has spent the past six months working hard to provide active opportunities for people in the local area. Kieran comments, “The response to my Boccia programme has been fantastic and I am delighted that there were so many teams taking part in this community focused event.

I have enjoyed supporting the players in learning more about the game and watching them develop their skills to the competitive levels we saw at the Foyle Arena. Well done to the Knockavoe Kiwi’s who came in first place, Arthritis Care in second place and Step Out For a Stroke in third place. The standard of play was fantastic and everyone who took part should be very proud.”

Boccia is a Paralympic sport suitable for people of all fitness levels and abilities. It promotes great health benefits whilst offering a social opportunity to take part in a sport both recreationally and competitively. Odhrán Doherty, Active Clubs Co-Ordinator for Disability Sport NI said, “I have been developing Boccia within Northern Ireland for a number of years and am a keen advocate for the sport. I love to see the passion that is evolving in Derry City & Strabane for Boccia and would encourage people with disabilities to join their local club and try the sport for themselves.”

The GOGA programme supports people of all ages and abilities to be active together and live healthier lifestyles. GOGA offers a number of inclusive activities including movement to dance, a walking club, a bike club, various boccia clubs and boxing sessions.
