Programme for Government Update

The NI Executive has published the latest consultation on Programme for Government.  During the summer the first draft was published and you can read Disability Action’s response.

The draft Programme for Government included an indicator on improving the lives of people with disabilities.  Disability Action welcomed this as we wanted to see a commitment for people with disabilities.

In August 2016 we worked with the new Department for Communities on a number of engagement events to help inform the action plan for Indicator 42.  Over 150 disabled people, their organisations and others attended the engagement events in Derry/Londonderry and Lisburn.  The information gathered at these events was developed into a report to help inform the action plan.

The Department for Communities then developed the draft action plan for the indicator and it has been included in the latest consultation on the Programme for Government.

Unfortunately, it’s not easy to find in the document.  You can link directly to it here.  It also doesn’t have a number anymore but you can see where it sits with the other indicators by looking at the overall document.

Over the coming months the Department for Communities will be organising engagement events so that they can talk to people about the draft Action Plan.  We will send more details on this when they become available.

Whilst the indicator is important for people with disabilities, there are other indicators that will also impact on the lives of people with disabilities.  Disability Action is currently going through the document and will publish a draft response in the next couple of weeks, which will highlight some of the other areas.

We’ll keep you up-to-date as things progress.  The deadline for responding to the consultation is the 23rd December 2016.
