£450,000 for 3 new National Lottery funded projects in Northern Ireland led by disabled people

More than £1 million has been awarded to 10 new research and pilot projects across the UK, of which £450,00 has been allocated to 3 projects in Northern Ireland. The funding has been granted as part of the DRILL (Disability Research on Independent Living and Learning) programme, a £5 million scheme led by disabled people and funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the largest funder of community activity in the UK.

Limavady’s Benone beach is Northern Ireland’s first fully inclusive beach, thanks to work carried out by local charity, Mae Murray Foundation in partnership with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. The announcement was made at a recent all-ability family fun day, showcasing new equipment, including Northern Ireland’s first surfboard suitable for wheelchair users.

£500,000 investment in 11 District Council Disability Sports Hubs across Northern Ireland

Disability Sport NI today launched the District Council Disability Sports Hub Project in Northern Ireland funded by the Department for Communities through Sport NI. This £500,000 project is part of the Active Living: No Limits 2021 Action Plan to improve the health and wellbeing of people with disabilities in Northern Ireland through participation in sport and active recreation.

Disability Action Update: Closure of Information and Advice Service in Belfast

From Thursday 31 August Disability Action will no longer be able to provide an information and advice service through our Belfast office (no other services are impacted).  Due to a range of funding cuts and failure to identify additional sources of funding the Board and Chief Executive have had to take the difficult decision to close the service.

£11,840 award in disability ruling against Charles Hurst Ltd

A woman who brought a case against her former employer under the Disability Discrimination Act has been awarded £11,840 by an Industrial Tribunal. The Tribunal found that Charles Hurst Limited failed in its duty to make reasonable adjustments for Marie-Claire McLaughlin, who was employed by the company as a Customer Service Advisor. The case was assisted by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.

A ‘human catastrophe’ – New UN condemnation for UK human rights record on disability.

The UK Government’s claim to be a ‘world leader in disability issues’ has today been crushed by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Committee has released damning Concluding Observations on the UK, following its first Review of the government’s compliance with the Convention.

Disability Sport NI is delighted to announce the launch of the District Council Disability Sports Hubs – Water Sports Project. With summer fast approaching and a growing demand for disability water sports in Northern Ireland, funding has been awarded to four Sailability projects to enable them to provide further opportunities for people with disabilities. Belfast Lough Sailability, Foyle Sailability, Lough Erne Yacht Club and Craigavon Water Sports Centre were the proud new recipients of a range of sailing crafts or a floating pontoon.

Brexit – Ensuring we protect disability equality

During the Referendum campaign in 2016, Disability Action engaged with disabled people, their organisations and other stakeholders on the possible impact of Brexit on people with disabilities. As a result of this engagement we took a position to support a remain position. The main reason behind this was the uncertainty of how rights attained under EU mechanisms would apply if we were to leave the EU.

Live Active NI, the new community interest company of Disability Sport NI this week launched their element of the wider Belfast City Council Every Body Active 2020 initiative funded through Sport NI. The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Brian Kingston joined representatives from Live Active NI, Disability Sport NI, Sport NI and Belfast City Council at City Hall earlier this week to celebrate the programmes that David Purdy and Pablo Córdoba Huertos, Active Recreation Officers for Live Active NI will deliver across Belfast. Participants from local schools and day centres demonstrated dance routines, before teaching The Lord Mayor how to play Boccia, a Paralympic game designed to suit people with a wide range of physical disabilities.
