The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2008) is an international agreement drawn up by states with the involvement of disabled people which affirms that people with disabilities have the same rights as everyone else.
The Convention was ratified on 8 June 2009 by the United Kingdom. This means the Government is legally bound to protect the human rights of its citizens with disabilities.
If you are a person with a disability or a representative of a disability organisation, you should understand the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and what this means for the rights of a person with a disability.
Equally, representatives of statutory organisation have a duty to ensure their policies and strategies comply with the Convention.
This course will help you to understand the principles of the Convention, appreciate disabled people's concerns and understand the mechanisms and frameworks needed to translate the Convention into practice.
