Understanding Human Rights (OCN Entry Level 3 and Level 1)


This course is unique to Northern Ireland and provides information about human rights and their relevance to people with disabilities.

Accreditation
This training has been accredited by the Open College Network (OCN) at various levels (Entry Level 3 and Level 1) to suit the abilities of all individuals.

Target group

It would be of relevance to people with disabilities or those wanting to learn more about the impact of human rights on people with disabilities including people in the community and voluntary and public sectors. No prior knowledge of human rights is necessary.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

-Understand the key features, principles and standards of human rights – what they are and why we have them.
-Understand the key features of the international and domestic human rights legal system and be able to explain how this is relevant to people with disabilities living in Northern Ireland.
-Challenge some common myths and misconceptions about human rights.
- Explain how human rights are relevant in a practical way to the lives of people with disabilities within Northern Ireland.

Course Structure
One full day training session (10.00am – 3.00pm)

Tutorial support sessions (if required)

The training is very interactive and will make use of a wide variety of methods of learning including group discussions, role plays and group and individual exercises, making it accessible for people with and without disabilities. There is also a Learner Assessment Workbook for participants to record their thoughts and findings and at the end of the section, there is a reflective activity which asks participants to reflect on the training programme.

Cost

This course is currently offered free of charge to people with disabilities and to the parents and principal carer of a disabled person.
