Developing a Disability and Human Rights Approach to Health and Social Care

New Training for Health and Social Care Professionals
People with disabilities experience a range of barriers which prevent them from accessing health and social care on an equal basis. Such barriers include questions over their capacity to make decisions, inaccessible communication, poor physical access and a lack of understanding among health and social care professionals of the 'right' approach. Disability Action has consulted with health and social care professionals and knows there is a great willingness to do the right thing. We have therefore developed a new training course to enable health and social care staff to understand what a disability and human rights approach is and how to implement it.

A disability and human rights approach
A disability and human rights approach to health and social care is about ensuring that health and social care is available and accessible to all people on a fair basis. It develops both the quality and effectiveness of health and social care, improves decision-making processes and enhances the health and well-being of all service users.

Training outcomes
- You will understand the barriers faced by people with disabilities when it comes to health and social care;
- You will learn what is meant by a disability and human rights approach in a health and social care setting;
- You will understand the benefits of a human rights approach to disability;
- You will know how to apply this approach practically in your job; and
- You will feel empowered to pass on your learning to your staff and colleagues.

Who is it for?
This training is relevant for front line staff working in the health and social care sector. A Development Masterclass has also been designed for managers, trainers and policy makers in the sector to enable them to pass on learning
to staff.

Course structure
The training programme has been designed to flexibly suit the needs of professionals working in the health and social care sector. For your convenience, the training can be delivered on site, in your place of work. If this is not suitable, we will try to source an alternative venue.

Full day sessions
The full day training sessions look in detail at a disability and human rights approach to health and social care, considering a wide range of case studies to practically demonstrate this approach.

Half day sessions
For professionals working in the health and social care sector, it can be difficult to dedicate a full day to training. It is for this reason that we have condensed the training programme into a half day session.

Both the half and full day sessions consider how you can apply a human rights approach to people with disabilities in your work.

Development Masterclass
With the current pressure on resources, it may not be feasible for front line staff to avail of external training. It is for this reason that we have designed the Development Masterclass.
This one day session enables managers, trainers and policy makers in the sector to understand what a disability and human rights approach to health and social care is and pass on learning to their staff. Participants can avail of course presentations, handouts, a free online resource and a free one hour bespoke training session for staff delivered by Disability Action's Centre on Human Rights.

A free online resource www.disabilityhealthtoolkit.org
A new website has also been developed by Disability Action's Centre on Human Rights, specifically for health and social care professionals. The website provides information on a disability and human rights approach and supports the training programme.

Benefits of the training programme
This training programme will support you and your team to:
- Understand the barriers faced by people with disabilities in accessing health and social care;
- Know how to remove these barriers in your job;
- Follow international best practice;
- Meet your professional ethical obligations;
- Further enhance the quality of your service to people with disabilities; and
- Minimise complaints.
