NIUSE Group the first to complete Level 1 'Understanding Human Rights'

25 June 2010

The Northern Ireland Union of Supported Employment’s (NIUSE) Service Users Group are the first group to complete OCN Level 1 in ‘Understanding Human Rights’- a new training course to Northern Ireland which is being delivered by Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities.

The NIUSE Service Users Group, which is made up of people with a range of disabilities from across Northern Ireland, received certificates at a presentation event held at NICVA. Speaking at the event, Dr. Colin Harper, Manager of the Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities said:

“Many situations experienced by people with disabilities involve human rights but there is a lack of awareness as to what the human rights of people with disabilities are. We are running this course to enable disabled people and others to understand the human rights of people with disabilities, identify unfair treatment and have the confidence to challenge this."

Edyth Dunlop, Manager of NIUSE, based in Derry said:

“The focus of NIUSE’s Service User Group is to identify the barriers to accessing employment faced by people with disabilities and to provide recommendations to overcome such barriers. This course has helped us to understand human rights and also how the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities can help people with disabilities access their rights, including the right to work in an open, inclusive and accessible environment.”

Catherine McColgan, a member of NIUSE’s Service Users Group from Strabane said:

“We all found the training very useful and we are delighted to be the first group to receive this qualification. This course has helped us understand that people with disabilities have the same human rights as everyone else and these rights should be respected.”

The OCN accredited ‘Understanding Human Rights’ training course is being offered at various levels to suit the abilities of all individuals.
