A Disability And Human Rights Approach To Health And Social Care

Research carried out by Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights identified that access to health and social care is an area of concern for people with disabilities. In addition, a consultation with health and social care professionals identified a lack of understanding in the sector of a human rights-based approach towards people with disabilities.

Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights therefore launched a new training programme and website for the Health and Social Care sector in June 2011, which aims to improve access to health and social care for people with disabilities.

The training programme entitled ‘Developing a Disability and Human Rights Approach to Health and Social Care’ has been designed to support health and social care professionals to:

-understand the barriers faced by people with disabilities in accessing health and social care;

-know how to remove these barriers in your job;

-follow international best practice;

-meet your professional ethical obligations;

-minimise complaints; and

-further enhance the quality of your service to people with disabilities.

The training is suitable for front line staff and managers working in the health and social care sector. A Development Masterclass has also been designed for managers, trainers and policy makers in the sector to enable them to pass on learning to staff.

A new website www.disabilityhealthtoolkit.org has also been developed by Disability Action, which provides guidance on how to improve access to health and social care for people with disabilities.
