Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights works to ensure effective implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Northern Ireland and its translation into legislation, policy and practice. The Centre is currently campaigning on the following:
Implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Northern Ireland
What needs to be done to make the Convention real for the 1 in 5 people living with a disability in Northern Ireland?

A Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland
Disability Action is calling for a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland that takes account of the particular circumstances of Northern Ireland and that protects the rights of people with disabilities living in Northern Ireland.
The right of people with disabilities to an adequate standard of living
“Disabled people are twice as likely to live in poverty as other citizens and are more likely to be hit first, hardest and longest by the current recession.”
Disability Alliance: The Coalition: Our Programme for Government www.disabilityalliance.org
If the Government is to meet its own target of all disabled people living independent and contributing lives by 2025, it needs to immediately reassess its recent announcements. Disability Action is urging Northern Ireland MPs to ensure that Parliament fully understands the implications for the lives of disabled people, not just in Northern Ireland, but throughout the UK.

A Disability and Human Rights-Based Approach to Health and Social Care
Research carried out by Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights identified that access to health and social care is an area of concern for people with disabilities. In addition, a consultation with health and social care professionals identified a lack of understanding in the sector of a human rights-based approach towards people with disabilities. Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights therefore launched a new training programme and website for the Health and Social Care sector in June 2011, which aims to improve access to health and social care for people with disabilities.
