Social Enterprise

A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives. Any surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.

The Social Enterprise Unit is involved in developing our existing social enterprises and supporting them to be more effective. It is also responsible for contributing to new social enterprise ideas.

Disability Action currently runs several of its services as social enterprises. These include the Training Service, the Door-to-Door Transport Service and the Mobility Centre. We are also exploring opportunity for the development of new social enterprises.

We are planning a new North West Centre in the Ebrington Barracks site in Derry / Londonderry. At the moment the proposal for the new building is being 'economically appraised'. We hope to start the work on the site in the summer of 2009. This building will space for other community and voluntary groups providing services to people with disabilities and have room to house new social enterprise businesses. We will keep you updated as this exciting project develops.
