Disability Action works out of a Belfast headquarters and three regional centres in Carrickfergus, Derry and Dungannon. The Derry office also houses a number of voluntary organisations for whom we provide “nursery” accommodation i.e. accommodation and office services.
Disability Action introduced new structures in 2001, designed to ensure the most effective and efficient delivery of our objectives.
Disability Action’s Board of Directors is responsible for all issues of corporate governance. Disability Action currently has 180 member organisations and all are invited to nominate candidates for Disability Action’s Board by a certain date each year, ballot forms listing all the candidates validly nominated are then issued to members and election is by a simple majority of the postal vote. The results of the election are declared at the Annual General Meeting. In any one-year under Disability Action’s constitution not less than 8 or more than 12 people comprise the Board of Directors and approximately 1/3 of the Directors retire each year. No one can serve more than six consecutive years on the Board.
The positions of Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer are elected at the first formal meeting of the Board of Directors following the Annual General Meeting. Although it is not a requirement of our Constitution, traditionally the majority of Board members have been people with disabilities.
Disability Action is a registered charity (Charity reference. XN71868A), a voluntary organisation and a company limited by guarantee, (company no. 19258). It has a subsidiary company, Disability Action Employment & Training Services, which houses a number of our projects.
